Alfred Augustus Mulliken Jr.

Mulliken PhotoCHESTER TWP. – Alfred Augustus Mulliken Jr., age 75, a resident of Chester Township since 1981, passed away Dec. 13, 2015, at David Simpson Hospice House in Cleveland.

He was born Jan. 17, 1940, in Beverly, Mass.

Alfred was a graduate of Purdue University, with a B.S. in Industrial Management, and a Vietnam veteran, U.S. Army.

He was a certified insurance instructor, State of Ohio, Department of Insurance, and a West Geauga Schools Board of Education member from 1992-1999, serving as board vice president in 1992, 1993 and 1999.

Alfred was a proud member of the West Geauga Performing Arts Foundation (president 2000-2002), West Geauga Kiwanis (past president), Cleveland City Club and the Chesterland Chamber of Commerce.

He enjoyed playing racquetball, golf, skiing, camping and hiking.

Alfred founded the Mulliken Agency in 1984, incorporating the agency in 1993 as Health, Retirement & Benefit Planning Corp.
He is survived by his children, Katharina “Tina” (John) Voss, Audrey (John) DuRoss, Alfred Augustus III “Gus” (Amber) and Madeleine “Mindy” Mulliken; grandchildren, Evan and Madeleine Voss, and Ruby and Owen DuRoss; siblings, David (Noreen), Linda (Mihail Filip) Mulliken and Sarah Mulliken; mother of their children, Gerlinde “Gigi” Mulliken; and beloved, Carol Goodman.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred Sr. and Elizabeth Mulliken.

Visitation and a Celebration of Life were held Dec. 15 at Gattozzi and Son Funeral Home.

Interment will be at a later date in Woodlawn Cemetery, Boston, Mass.

Frederick Richard Schroeder

Schroeder PhotoRUSSELL TWP. – Frederick Richard Schroeder, age 84, of Russell Township (Novelty), passed away on Jan. 11, 2016, while surrounded by his family.

Fred, or Dick, is survived by his loving wife, Jeanne (nee Ashton), of 60 years.

He was a devoted father to sons, Fred “Dickie” (deceased), Wesley “Scott,” Michael and Dale (Janis) Schroeder. A loving grandfather — “Pop Pop” — to Scotty (deceased), Owen (Shauna), Jenna, Mallory and Stephanie. Cherished brother of Nancy Cappadona (deceased) and a loving brother-in-law and uncle.

Fred was the son of Fred Charles and Helen B. Schroeder, both deceased. He was born in Cleveland, in 1931, and was an active resident of Novelty and Geauga County since 1937. He graduated from Russell High School, in 1950.

Fred was a medaled Korean War veteran who always flew the flag and was 100 percent American made.

He retired as quality control manager from the TRW Valve Division, after 38 years.

Fred spent the past 27 years actively restoring and showing off his “had to be red” antique International Harvester/Farmall tractors and his Standard Gauge Lionel Trains. He was a proud member of the Historical Engine Society, Train Collectors Association, VFW 663 and Military Order of the Purple Heart Veterans.

Fred was a friend to so many and will be greatly missed by all, including his loving cats.

Visitation and services will be held on Sunday, Jan. 17 at Gattozzi and Son Funeral Home, Chester Township.

Interment at a later date in Riverview Cemetery, Russell Township.

Ferdinand “Ferdl” Aster

Aster PhotoCHESTER TWP. – Ferdinand “Ferdl” Aster, of Chester Township, died Jan. 19, 2016, in residence at Joy’s Place.

Ferdl was born in August 1931, in Wagrain, Austria. He had been a resident of Chesterland since 1963, when he married and moved from North Madison, Ohio.

Ferdl trained as a cabinetmaker in Austria and toured with the United States Special Services during World War II. In 1955, he came to the U.S. as the technical director at Rabbit Run Theater in North Madison.

Known as Ferdl when he was certified as a ski instructor in Europe and with the United States Ski Association, Eastern Division. He also taught at Camp Mystic in Pennsylvania during the 1950s.

Ferdl began instructing at Mont Chalet Ski Area in Chesterland when it opened for the 1961-62 ski season. The Ferdl Aster Ski School was then incorporated and was the first ski school at the Brandywine Ski Area when that area opened.

Ferdl held many trophies as an alpine and cross-country ski racer in America and Europe. For 20 years, he guided spring ski trips through his Ferdl Aster Ski School and Ski Shop. It was at this time he introduced many people to skiing in the Austrian Alps.

As Ferdinand, he owned Ferdinand Aster Cabinet Shop, where he worked during the summers. His work has been voted the Best in the Show at the Cleveland Museum of Art May Show. It was there that his work was featured on the cover of the May Show Program.

He did woodworking for many special pieces at client’s requests, as well as pieces for The Western Reserve Historical Museum, The ASM World Center at the Geodesic Dome, The Cleveland Museum of Art, The Cleveland Symphony and others.

Survivors are his wife Ruth; son, Chris (Bette); son-in-law, Keith Wilt; and grandchildren, Shannon Wilt, Morgan Wilt, Chloe Aster and Kyle Aster.

Mr. Aster was preceded in death by his daughter, Anneliese “Lee” Aster Wilt; siblings; and parents.

Family will receive friends from 12-4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 30 at Gattozzi and Son Funeral Home, 12524 Chillicothe Road, Chester.

A Celebration Reception will begin at 5 p.m. Jan. 30 at the Chardon VFW Post 6519, 752 Water St., Chardon.

Private burial will be at a later date.

Rebecca Dempsey

DempseyRebecca (nee Southall) Dempsey, age 76, was born on Jan. 5, 1940, to the late Roy and Bethania (nee Short) Southall, in Centerville, Pa., and passed away on Jan. 19, 2016.

She was the beloved wife for 58 years of Morris; loving mother of Rick (wife Fiona), Kathy Borger, Nena Malone (husband Carl) and the late Douglas; devoted grandmother of Matt Dempsey, Kellie Dolinsky (Drew), Nicole Malone, Carl Malone III, Myles Dempsey, Alex Borger (fiancée Tiffany Kehlmeier), Tyler Borger; great-grandmother of Jacob and Peyton; cherished sister of the late Diana, Rexford, and John Southall; and dear aunt and great-aunt of many.

Rebecca was a resident of Chagrin Falls for three years, formerly of York, Pa., and Chester Township.

She attended high school in Pennsylvania and was a special needs aid for Social Service Field.

Rebecca was an antique glass collector. She coached softball and was an Indians fan.

Rebecca will be remembered most as an easy going, caring and giving woman who loved her pets. She will be greatly missed.

Joseph A. Matsko Jr.

Matsko PhotoCHESTER TWP. – Joseph A. Matsko Jr., age 81, a resident of Chester Township for over 40 years, passed away Feb. 6, 2016.

Born on Feb. 15, 1934, he was the beloved husband of the late Patricia; loving father of Julianne Matsko, Tina (Edgar) Hilliard, Theresa Giallanza, Andrea Miralia and Joseph G.; devoted grandfather of Leigh (Brian) Perrino, Jamie (Thom) Husby, Simone Perry, Nikki and Dominic Giallanza, and Samantha Miralia; dear great-grandfather of Avie and Cameron Husby, and Charlotte and Lucy Perrino; and cherished brother of 11.

Joseph was well known as the “Singing Antenna Man.”

He retired from the Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company and enjoyed sailing and playing golf.

Friends may call at Gattozi and Son Funeral Home, 12524 Chillicothe Road, Chester, from 4-8 p.m. on Feb. 10.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Feb. 11 at Church of Saint Anselm, 12969 Chillicothe Road, Chester.

Gary A. Harpst

Harpst PhotoCHESTER TWP. – Gary A. Harpst, age 71, passed away peacefully in his sleep at home in Chester Township.

Gary was formerly of Eastlake, where he lived for many years.

He was the beloved husband of Charlotte Keim Harpst; loving son of the late Earle and June Harpst, of Greenville, Pa.; devoted brother of Diane (Frank) Maier, of Culpeper, Va.; and dear uncle of Krissy Maier and Stephanie (Jason) Summers, also of Virginia.

Mr. Harpst was born in Greenville, Pa., on April 10, 1944. He was a graduate of Penn State Bien Ahoa.

Gary retired from ABB in 2010 and enjoyed hunting, books and model trains, and was an active member at the Little Church in the Vale, Gates Mills.

A memorial gathering will be announced at a later date.

A private family interment has taken place at Western Reserve Memorial Gardens, Chester.

Shirley Ryan

Shirley Ryan, 93, died Feb. 24, 2016.

Born in Cleveland May 12, 1922, to Willard and Goldie (nee Cotton) Shepard, she was a long-term resident of Russell Township, Mayfield Heights and recently of The Village at Saint Edward in Fairlawn.

Shirley was a long-time cook for West Geauga Schools.

Preceded in death by her husband, Robert; and sister, Arlene.

Shirley is survived by her son, Steven; daughter-in-law, Linda; grandchildren, Elizabeth Miller and Mark Ryan; and great-grandchildren, Caitlyn, J, Matthew and Mikayla.

Shirley had a beautiful voice and loved to sing. Wherever she was, everyone knew her and loved her.

She will be missed by all who knew her. Rest in peace.

Phyllis Kaczmarek Baumgardner

DSC_9485Phyllis Patricia Kaczmarek was the eldest daughter of Charlotte and Walter J. Kaczmarek, of Cuyahoga Heights, where her father served as the fire chief of Cuyahoga Heights Village.

Phyllis loved to sing and dance, and she took on her father’s commanding characteristics throughout her life.

Phyllis was awarded her Bachelor’s of Education from Bowling Green University.

She married Andrew James Baumgardner, of Maple Heights, at the First Methodist Church, in Cleveland, on Dec. 29, 1959.

Phyllis and Andy moved to Chester Township and went on to have three children, Mark, Lisa and James. A fourth child, Patrician Ann, died shortly after birth.

In her early career, Phyllis was a teacher. She was awarded her Master’s of Education at Kent State University and taught both the fifth and sixth grades for years at Saint Helen’s Catholic School, in Newbury Township, which at the time was the home of the Saint Helen’s world famous unicycling team. At that time, Father Moran directed the unicycle team and during lunch period and after school the unicyclists took over the school for practice in the gymnasium, through the hallways and even up-and-down the stairs.

Later in life, Phyllis served 26 years in her career with Progressive Insurance, in Mayfield Heights, where she started as an insurance adjuster and went on to become the head receptionist at the building that houses the Progressive legal and IT departments on Landerbrook Drive.

Phyllis was very proud of her career at Progressive and she loved greeting everybody and running the show at the front desk.

Phyllis loved to sing and always sang soprano in the church choir wherever she attended.

Phyllis was a lifelong member of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, in the South Broadway neighborhood of Cleveland, and when she moved back to Cleveland later in life she again became an active member.

While in Chesterland, the family were members of Trinity United Methodist Church.

Upon relocating to Maryland to be near her children, Phyllis sang at Saint Alphonsus Rodriguez Church in Woodstock, Md.

Phyllis was the beloved wife of the late Andrew Baumgardner; devoted mother of Mark Baumgardner (Carter Lindsay), Lisa Malone (Brian Ocheltree) and James Baumgardner (Allison Jones); dear grandmother of Patrick and Andrew Malone, Brandon and Matthew Ochletree, and Ella and Will Baumgardner; and loving sister of Mary Lou Kalish.

A memorial ceremony will be held at Saint Alphonsus Rodriguez Catholic Church in Woodstock, Md., on Tuesday, March 1 at 10 a.m.

There will be an additional memorial ceremony this summer in Chesterland, after which her remains will be interred with her husband at Slitor Cemetery in Burton Village.

John M. Wolter

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERACHESTER TWP. – John M. Wolter, 75, of Chester Township, entered eternal life on Feb. 22, 2016.

John was born on April 16, 1940, at the noon whistle, to parents Evelyn (nee Ulstad) and Alfred Wolter, in Sisseton, S.D.

John, a car enthusiast, retired from Lincoln Electric after 35-plus years and spent his winters in Marco Island, Fla. He coached Lion Club Youth Football and established the West Geauga Wrestling Federation in order to share his passion for wrestling with the youth of Chesterland.

John graduated in 1958 from Cleveland Heights High School and attended Ohio University.

John is survived by his wife of 56 years (his childhood sweetheart), Ruth J. (nee Klamer) Wolter; daughter Debra J. Wolter, of Lake Hiawatha, N.J.; son, Mike A. Wolter and wife Sue, of Chesterland; daughter Donna M. Harris, husband Ray and grandchildren Julia and Michael Harris, of Lancaster, N.Y.; and a brother, Robert Wolter.

Friends may call at Gattozzi and Son Funeral Home, 12524 Chillicothe Road, Chesterland, on Sunday, March 6, from 2-4 p.m.

Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Monday, March 7 at 10 a.m.

Interment at Chester Township Cemetery.

George Harry Elliott

GeorgeHarryElliotGeorge was born on March 31, 1938, to Hollis and Olive (nee Tyla) Elliott.

He was born, raised and attended West Geauga Schools.

George passed away on Feb. 22, 2016.

In 1956, George married Shirley Lincks and they had a daughter, Vickie, in 1957, and a son, Tod, in 1959.

In 1962, George owned his own company as a pyrometric engineer.  They lived in Ohio until 1979, then moved to Bonners Ferry, Idaho, where he bought and operated Meadow Creek Meats until 1987.

George then built his own log house in 1988, living there until his death.

After building his own house, George built and sold several houses. George bought and remodeled the Bonnerport Building, which he sold in 2001. In 2007, they purchased the Moyie Springs Store, which was sold in 2013.

During the many years George lived in Moyie Springs, he was an active member of the Curley Creek Volunteer Fire District.

Throughout his life, George was an entrepreneur in many things.

George loved being with his daughter, granddaughter and great grandchildren. He also loved fishing and hunting.

George was preceded in death by his parents;  son, Tod; one sister; and two brothers.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Shirley; daughter, Vickie; granddaughter, Melanie; four great-grandchildren, Chloe, Bailey, Drake and Deklen, all living in North Idaho; brother Richard Elliott (Sylvia); sisters-in-law, Jeanne Bodjiak and Dorothy Wigand, all living in Ohio; and many nieces and nephews.

George will be forever missed by all who knew and loved him.

A memorial was held at Crossroads Chapel in Bonners Ferry, Idaho, on March 5, 2016, at 11 a.m.

Robert Ernest Russell

Russell PhotoCHESTER TWP. – Robert Ernest Russell, age 86, of Chester Township, passed away on March 22, 2016, at his home.

He was born April 1, 1929, in Chardon.

Robert was the beloved husband of Marilyn (nee Jackson); loving father of Patti (Robert) Boyles, Susan (Joe) Konieczny and Robert (Linda); devoted grandfather of seven and great-grandfather of seven; and dear brother of Doris (Russell) Wenger.

Robert retired from Fisher Body in Euclid and enjoyed his volunteer work at Geauga Hospital for over 25 years.

Family and friends will gather for a Memorial Service at 11 a.m. on April 2, 2016, at Christ Presbyterian Church, 12419 Chillicothe Road, Chester.

Merritt Johnquest

johnquestRUSSELL TWP. – Merritt Johnquest passed away peacefully on March 20, 2016, surrounded by family. He was 92 years old and a resident of Russell Township (Novelty) since 1963.

His beloved wife of 59 years, Ellen Johnquest, preceded him in death in 2010.

Merritt is survived by his four children, Amy, of Holyoke, Mass., Matt, of Russell, Gilbert, of Los Angeles, and Harry, of Youngstown; and grandchildren, Patrick Johnquest Conlin, and Astrelle, Connor and Ryan Johnquest.

Merritt grew up in Waterbury, Conn. His formal education included cadet training and radio schools for the Army Air Force, 1943 – 46; Trinity College, Hartford, Conn., class of 47 (and was a lifelong class agent); and the Master’s program at the Graduate School of Business Administration, University of Pittsburgh, in 1948.

He served the U.S. Army Corps in radio communications while stationed in Burma in 1946.

A longtime ad man, he was vice president creative director for Fuller, Smith & Ross Inc., of Cleveland, for 20 years and then joined Jayme Organization, in Beachwood, from 1973 to 1993. Among his many awards are an EMMY, One of the 100 Best TV Commercials, Worlds Best TV Commercials, Best Seller, ADDYs and multiple recognitions from the Cleveland Ad Club and Cleveland Society of Communicating Arts.

Some of the many organizations of which he was a member include The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, Cleveland Society of Communication Arts, The Press Club, The Sierra Club, Mensa and many more.

He was active in the ‘Keep Russell Green’ campaign beginning in the ‘60s. Russell now is 20 percent parks and preserves.

His hobbies included gardening, little theatre, travel and jazz.

From 1949 through 2014, he created and maintained a comprehensive family photo history.

Merritt hosted many beloved parties, in particular the annual jam sessions, “Jazz at Lake Ellen” for over 35 years.

A celebration of Merritt’s life is scheduled for July 24, 2016, “Come Rain or Come Shine at Lake Ellen.”

Thomas G. Herrick

CHESTER TWP. – Thomas G. Herrick, of Chester Township, an income tax consultant and Financial Advisor for 50 years in Solon, later in Chesterland, died peacefully on May 24, 2016.

Born into a diplomatic and medical family, he leaves behind his beloved wife of 70 years, Dorothy (nee Rhoades); and cherished children, Pamela (Dewey) Thomas, Wendy (Paul) Nye, Thomas G. Jr. and William; devoted grandchildren, Helene and Shannon Herrick, Peter H. (Jaimie) Nye, Jeffrey M. (Dr. Abigail) Nye and Kevin P. (Jenna) Nye; loving great-grandfather of Allison, Iris and Delilah Nye; and “surrogate father” to Katie, Margaret, Kathie, Donna, Chrissy, Helga, Judy, Dani, Gordon, and Duvy.

He proudly served in U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, was a member of the Sons of the Revolution, The Mayflower Descendants, Beta Theta Pi Fraternity (Adelbert College of Western Reserve, Class of 1948), an honorary member of Solon Historical Society and the Chesterland Historical Foundation.

Family will greet friends from 2-5 p.m. on Saturday, June 4 at Steinbauer Funeral Home, 33375 Bainbridge Road, Solon.

Roger E. Csanyi

CHESTER TWP. – Roger E. Csanyi, 69, a lifelong resident of Chester Township, passed away at Euclid Hospital on May 28, 2016. He was born Nov. 24, 1946 in Cleveland.

Roger was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in Vietnam.

He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science and a Master’s Degree in Education from Kent State University.

Roger was an adjunct faculty member at Lakeland Community College, Bryant and Stratton, and Kent State University, where he taught computer classes.

He was a member of the VFW, Valley Lutheran Church, in Chagrin Falls, and a former member of the Chester Township Fire Rescue.

He also enjoyed fishing, working with computers and coaching his sons in the West Geauga Baseball Federation, where he was at one time commissioner of the league.

Roger worked in the I.T. department for Towmotor-Caterpillar in Mentor for 23 years and later taught Information Technology at Euclid High School.

He is survived by his wife, Judy; daughter, Kelly Warner; sons, Steven (Nicole Kralka) and Adam (fiancé Tara White); and grandchildren, Payton and Fiona.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Stephen and Alice Csanyi.

Visitation and services were held June 2 at Gattozzi and Son Funeral Home, in Chester Township.

Burial was in Western Reserve Memorial Gardens, in Chester.

William Harris Jones

Jones-Obit-PhotoWilliam Harris (Bill) Jones, 88, of Katy, Texas, entered the Kingdom of Heaven on June 1, 2016.

He was born on Sept. 13, 1927, and raised in Cleveland. He graduated from East Tech High School and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

Bill was a member of Chesterland Baptist Church and the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of Ohio. He was employed as a stationary engineer for The Cleveland Press for 37 years.

He enjoyed summers on his island in Temagami, Ontario, and was a lifelong fan of the Cleveland Indians and Ohio State Buckeyes. His love for sports was backed by talent: He won the high school state swimming championship in butterfly.

He served on the boards of the West Geauga Recreation Council and Fathers’ Club.

Bill loved golfing, maintaining his apple orchard and garden, and serving the church with the Wednesday Workers.

He moved to Columbus in 2002 and Texas in 2007 to be near family.

Bill was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 52 years, Lois Eisenmann Jones.

He is survived by his daughters, Janice Blewitt, of Katy, Texas, Jacquelyn Murphy (Max), of Indianapolis, Ind., Donna Dixon (Allen), of Fredericktown, Ohio; grandchildren, Laura Blewitt, Ben Blewitt, Matthias Murphy and Will Dixon; brother, David Jones, of Pueblo West, Colo.; and precious and loving caregivers, Geebah, Annette and many others at Sunrise of Cinco Ranch.

He was the son of the late James and Johanna (nee Fliegel) Jones.

He also was preceded in death by son-in-law, Thomas Blewitt.

A memorial service will be held at the Western Reserve Memorial Gardens Chapel, 11521 Chillicothe Road, Chester Township, at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 18.

LarrickDr. William A. “Bill” Larrick Jr., D.O., passed away peacefully on June 17, 2016.

He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Jane (nee Anderson); sons, Wm. David (Debra) and Scott (Polly); grandchildren, William, Allison, Sean and Kaitlyn; and sister Juene (Robert) Tingle.

He was predeceased by his parents, William A. Sr. and Margaret; and sister Darryl.

Bill graduated from Muskingum College and the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine.

He served as the President of the Cleveland Academy of Osteopathic Medicine, was named a Clinical Associate Professor of the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine and was Board Certified by the American College of Osteopathic Medicine in Family Medicine.

Dr. Larrick was recently recognized as a Founder of the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine.

He practiced medicine for 40 years in Chester Township, where he loved being the “family doctor.”

Locally, he was a founding member of the Wolverine Gridiron Club and a past member of the West Geauga Kiwanis and West Geauga Boosters.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 21, from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m., at Gattozzi and Son Funeral Home, 12524 Chillicothe Road, Chester.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 22 at Christ Presbyterian Church, 12419 Chillicothe Road, Chester.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations to be made to the American Osteopathic College of Family Practice (AOCFP) Education and Research Foundation, 330 E. Algonquin Road, Suite 1, Arlington Heights, IL 60005 in his name.

beck-photoBrian S. Beck, age 63, passed away on Sept. 16, 2016, in Chester Township.

He was born on Sept. 25, 1952, in Lakewood.

Brian was a native of Rocky River and was currently residing in Chester. He was a 1971 graduate of Rocky River High and a 1975 graduate of Miami University.

Brian was active in many organizations throughout his life. With his love of all music, he was currently a member of Lakeland Civic Band and The Workman Circle Klezmer Orchestra.

He was also active with the Cleveland Sight Center sailing program, where he volunteered teaching sailing.

He was an active member of E.S.U.U. Church in Kirtland.

His wit, kindness and depth of knowledge on many subjects will be missed by all who knew him.

Devoted and loving father of Benjamin (Kelly) Beck, of Albuquerque, N.M.; brother of Warren (JoAnn), of Olmsted Falls, and the late Neil Beck; devoted uncle of Caitlin and Jennifer Beck; and dear friend of Amy Singer.

A Celebration of Brian’s life will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 29 at E.S.U.U. Church, 10848 Chillicothe Road, Kirtland.

Edward J. Majetich

majetich-photoEdward J. Majetich, age 85, a Chester Township resident since 1961, passed away Sept. 18, 2016, at Holly Hill Nursing Home in Newbury Township.

He was born May 6, 1931, in Natrona Heights, Pa.

Edward was a member of Chardon VFW Post 6519.

He enjoyed bee keeping, collecting antique bottles, gardening, canning, hunting, traveling and wine making.

Edward was very creative and industrious; curious about many things. He built his own barn and greenhouse, and dabbled in clay modeling.

Edward and Marge enjoyed polka music, traveling to polka dances frequently. Inspired by polka music, Edward occasionally played the accordion and harmonica.

Edward was a machine repairman/electrician for the Eaton Axle Corp. in Cleveland for 29 and a half years, and later for Metaullics in Solon for 10 years.

He is survived by his children, Pastor Robert (Bethany), Karen Russell, Mark, and Sandy (Rick) Vanderhoof; the love of his life, Marge Stipich; grandchildren, Justin and Josiah Majetich, Tessa and Kelsey Russell, and Olivia and Austin Vanderhoof; and siblings Jerry, William (Mary) and Catherine (Stanley, deceased) Cypher.

He was preceded in death by his siblings Dan, George, Vic, Emma and Frank; and parents, Joseph and Catherine Majetich.

Visitation and funeral service took place Sept. 22 and Sept. 23, 2016, with burial in Western Reserve Memorial Gardens in Chester.

Dr. Carnita R. Lorenzo

carnita-lorenzoCarnita R. Lorenzo, age 85, passed away Saturday, Aug. 20, 2016, in Dayton, Tenn.

She was born Oct. 14, 1930, in Bledsoe County, Tennessee, to the late Aaron and Lessie (nee Milliron) Swafford.

Carnita was also preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Reuben S. Lorenzo, MD.

She is survived by her daughter, Sofia Lorenzo, of Falls Church, Va.; three sisters, Melrose Godbehere, of Dayton, Tenn., Nancy Headlee, of Hixson, Tenn., and Billie Hall, of St. Petersburg, Fla.; as well as several nieces and nephews.

After almost 50 years of residing on County Line Road in Chester Township – and after the death of her husband — Carnita moved to Dayton, Tenn., in 2014.

Throughout her life, she devoted everything she had not only to her family and friends, but also to her students where she was a Professor of Nursing Education for over 37 years.

A service for Carnita will be held on Friday, Oct. 21 at 11 a.m. at St. Anselm’s Catholic Church, 12969 Chillicothe Road, Chesterland.

 

Gary Patrick O’Kelly

okellyGary Patrick O’Kelly, age 78, beloved husband for 28 years of Sharon (nee Spryszak); loving father of Barry (Anne Thomas), Lisa O’Kelly Nye (husband, Edward Nye) and Teresa; devoted grandfather of Melissa Rose Schweller (husband, Matthew) and Garrett O’Kelly Nye; dearest brother of Michael, Sharon Youngdahl (husband, Jon) and Dennis; former husband of Carroll O’Kelly. Also survived by his canine friend Charlie.

Gary was born on May 6, 1938, in Fort Smith, Ark., and passed away on Dec. 5, 2016. He was a resident of Russell Township for 42 years, formerly of Dunbar, W. Va.

Gary was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Wickliffe and Chagrin, and East-end Purchasing Agents.

He was the owner/operator, artist and sign painter of O’Kelly Sign Company.

Gary held a state record for pole vault in West Virginia for high school track.

He loved golfing, skiing, swimming, diving and track.

Gary enjoyed scotch, cigars and beers.

Tailgating at West Virginia University Football games was a favorite tradition of his.

Gary will be remembered by family and friends as being a little ornery, funny, talented and humorous man with a quick wit.

Cremation by DeJohn Crematory. Tribute service on Saturday, Dec. 10, 2016, at 6 p.m. at the funeral home.

Family will receive friends to pay tribute to and celebrate the life of Gary at The DeJohn Funeral Home & Celebrations Center of Chesterland, 12811 Chillicothe Road, on Saturday, Dec. 10, from 2-6 p.m.
